Sixth Form College Context
The Burgate Sixth Form is a non-selective comprehensive Academy with entrance requirements of 6 GCSEs at C / 4 grade or above including GCSE English and Mathematics and a B / 6 in the subjects chosen for study where relevant.
Around forty percent of our students join us in Year 12, mostly from local, non-selective schools with a small number from the Salisbury grammar schools. The majority of students study three A levels, although some more academically able students choose four A Levels. Students with an average GCSE A grade are encouraged to take the EPQ.
Typical class sizes are around 12 but we do run some classes of over 20 in some of the more popular subjects, such as Mathematics, Biology, Psychology, Media Studies, Business Studies and History.
We offer all traditional A levels including the facilitating subjects. We timetable nine hours of teaching over two weeks with an extra hour a week for guided independent study per subject. This equates to 180 guided learning hours per subject per year. Students are not routinely entered for an AS examination.
We keep our predicted grades as accurate as possible to offer a genuine reflection of what we believe the student is likely to achieve at the end of Year 13.
We base students’ predicted grades on internal assessments and mock examinations. We will predict them one grade higher if their mark is in the top half of a grade range. Last year staff predictions were within 2% accuracy.
