Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at The Burgate
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)
At The Burgate School and Sixth Form we are fully committed to ensuring our culture embraces equality, diversity and inclusivity (EDI) by embedding practices, procedures, actions and behaviours that ensure every individual student and staff member can thrive and be themselves.
We aim to be a positive force for equality of opportunity within our school community. Staff and students are respected as individuals, and we celebrate diversity in the rich mix of backgrounds and experiences each bring to The Burgate.
We constantly strive to develop our knowledge and understanding of academic and professional thought, individual experiences, and best practice in matters pertaining to EDI and to routinely seek feedback from stakeholders across the Burgate ecosystem to help us reflect on the things we are doing, recognise the changing needs of people within our community and to support continual improvement.
We are all different
Understanding, acceptance, respect and the celebration of individual differences underpin Burgate Life.
Every student is valued for who they are and offered a curriculum and activities beyond the classroom that promote curiosity and flexibility of thought supported by the outstanding provision of spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC). Our approach to teaching always reflects planning between experts and teachers to ensure learning is accessible to every student and the positive attitudes and relationships we foster support a shared sense of cohesion, belonging, respect and tolerance that underpin our commitment to eliminate discrimination in all forms and our dedication to ensuring our young people embrace and celebrate individuality and differences as they navigate the future.
Beyond any statutory obligation we ensure staff at The Burgate feel understood, empowered and respected. From the recruitment process to onboarding and throughout their career, prospective and existing staff are assured of our ongoing commitment to provide a sense of belonging that enables each individual to be their authentic self.
At The Burgate we are person centred and not label led, as such reasonable adjustments are available for every applicant and staff member with no prerequisite to disclose and no formal diagnosis required.
