The Burgate School Catchment Area:
We are very proud that each year many parents from outside of our school catchment choose to send their children to our school. With a comprehensive school bus network serving a wide local area, The Burgate is accessible to many students wishing to study with us.
Burgate School Welcome Video: As a result of the COVID-19 crisis we are currently unable to welcome visitors to the school or to give tours but Team Burgate have created a welcome video that we hope will give both parents and students a glimpse of Burgate life and answer some of the questions you may have. The video introduces parents and students to key staff particularly supporting Year 6 transition and provides information to help when considering Year 7 applications but also provides an overview for applicants from other year groups who may be interested in applying for a place in our main school.. View here.
· Headteacher, David Pover will welcome you all and explain a little about Burgate school life.
· Deputy Headteacher, Katja Gibson will talk to you about the curriculum we offer.
· Our Head Boy and Head Girl will be saying 'hi' and talking about their experiences as Burgate students.
· Head of Year 7, Lisa Mann, will provide an overview of how we support our new students through the transition to big school and how we help them to settle once they arrive.
Admissions Questions: Should you have any questions that we have not answered in our video please email firstname.lastname@example.org and we will post responses to FAQs on the admissions page of the website.
Virtual Tour: This is coming soon too and will be an opportunity for you to take a virtual wander around the school!
School Prospectus: Get a glimpse either digitally or please request a copy of our new school prospectus. Read about more of the things we offer our students and how we support their journey. Prospectuses may be viewed on our homepage.
Tours of the school: With regret tours are not currently possible. Please view the online welcome video and get in touch if you have any further questions. We really hope to offer further opportunities to visit us in person soon.
“Parents are overwhelmingly positive about the high quality of education and, particularly, the exceptional level of pastoral care that pupils receive at this school.” Ofsted 2019
Applications for Year 7 places:
Applications must be submitted through the local education authority within which you live by the end of October. If you live in a different county to our school, you can still place The Burgate as your first choice. At the beginning of March places are allocated by the local education authority and parents are informed of the outcome of their application. From there those successful at securing a place at The Burgate will receive a Welcome Pack and will begin a comprehensive induction process to ensure a successful transition for each child.
The Burgate School has over 25 feeder schools ranging across Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire. At times a student can be the only one transitioning to The Burgate from their Junior School which may make them apprehensive about starting school. Our comprehensive pastoral system aims to support all students particularly those who are uncertain or anxious about September.
We have a Headstart programme designed to support students identified as needing any additional support with the transition to secondary school which in the Summer Term of Year 6 alleviates fears and anxieties through a series of visits where fun group activities, tours of the school and opportunities to meet other new students and key staff can all help with the transition. The students involved say that it has a hugely positive effect and that they feel much more confident about starting with us as a result!
