Curriculum Intent
Cambridge Advanced National: Health & Social Care: Extended Certificate (Equivalent of one A-Level)
We want students to leave this course with the knowledge, confidence and skills needed to progress into university, apprenticeships or careers within the health and social care sector. This course is designed for students who want to make a difference. You will develop a strong understanding of how health and social care services support individuals at every stage of life. Alongside subject knowledge, we aim to build your communication skills, professionalism, empathy and independence — all essential qualities for working with people.
This course is ideal for students considering careers in nursing, social work, teaching, midwifery, paramedic science or other caring professions and offers a combination of theory with real-life application. You will explore how health and social care services support individuals across their lifespan — from early childhood to older adulthood.
Implementation – How we support you;
The course is carefully structured so that you first learn the core principles of health and social care — such as building positive relationships, safeguarding and promoting equality — before applying them to more complex topics like public health, mental health and anatomy and physiology.
Lessons include:
· Clear explanations and modelling from teachers
· Real-life case studies and scenarios
· Opportunities for discussion and debate
· Practice with exam-style questions
· Structured support for coursework assignments
You will receive regular feedback to help you improve and develop confidence in both exams and coursework.
Impact – Where this can take you:
By the end of the course, you will -
· Understand how health and social care services operate
· Be able to apply your knowledge to real-life situations
· Develop strong research, communication and evaluation skills
· Feel confident managing deadlines and independent study
Students go on to study courses such as nursing, midwifery, social work, teaching and paramedic science, or begin degree apprenticeships and employment within the sector. Most importantly, you will leave the course with the skills, values and understanding needed to positively impact the lives of others.
